Coach
is a profession that requires sufficient knowledge and
insight about how to use coaching in working with teams and
individuals. We all lead others whether as a parent, trainer,
teacher, manager or co-worker.
Coaching is a powerful tool and means "aid to helping
one-self" which means that the person you are coaching
owns the problem as well as the solution to a 100 %.
A good ability to communicate is a prerequisite for all
coaching. We have to become aware of how we speak and more
importantly, how we listen. Often we relapse into
old habits that could prohibit us from fully connecting
with others when we speak or listen. The biggest problem
we are dealing with is a filter we call "the little
voice" (your inner voice) which is always focused on
"right or wrong" or "yes or no". My
responsibility as a speaker is to reach the listener and
to be clear about how it is being received. As a listener
it is my responsibility to fully comprehend what is being
said. Communication is based on a mutual desire to understand
each other.
In order to have a maximal outcome, i.e. being able to
find solutions and to grow with the person you are coaching,
you need to build a relationship. The stronger relationship
we have, the bigger is the chance of reaching the desired,
maximal result.
A relationship is being built pretty much from every
contact between people. Every day we develop and challenge
old relationships and we are building new ones. The basic
parts in creating a relationship is: Listen - See - Understand.
In order for a relationship to grow and develop coaching
must take place on a regular basis. A conversation should
always be between two people and as often as one feels the
need. It is important that only two people are present in
order for both to feel comfortable and safe.
The main abilities of a Coach:
- Commitment - You can't get others fired up unless you
are on fire yourself
- Be yourself - Treat other people the way you would like
to be treated
- Honesty - Never distort the truth and never misuse a trust
